Challenges Make Me Feel Alive!

Mariano Bañon, SELLBYTEL Group IT Director in Barcelona, is the perfect example that a positive attitude towards challenges can lead to great success. The friendly Argentinian started working when he was only 15 years old and by the age of 20, he left his home country to search new challenges in Europe. His great passion for IT has helped him progress quickly in his professional career – especially throughout his time with SELLBYTEL. In our latest Talk the 31 year old tells us all about his successful career with the outsourcing specialist in Barcelona.

Mariano, please tell us a little more about you and your career with the SELLBYTEL Group!

I started working in the SELLBYTEL IT department in 2006. At that time, we were just four technicians supporting 350 employees. Throughout my time with SELLBYTEL, I have developed in various areas within IT: I went from a Telephony Technician, to a Systems, Networking and Security Specialist. I am now leading the IT department in Spain with a team of 40 people, managing more than 3,000 employees. 

And what do you particularly like about your position?

I have always been passionate about IT. It’s almost like I have become addicted to the daily challenges coming my way. Challenges in fact make me feel alive! Besides, I absolutely love my team. I would be nothing without it!

So which challenges have you faced?

I have encountered many challenges, because my role has changed and expanded a lot since I started. I’ve had to form teams and implement new processes and technologies to support our business’s needs. The daily decision making has helped me learn how to work under pressure. This is something I really enjoy now!

What are your tips to others who would like to have this career path within the company?

You should wear the “SELLBYTEL t-shirt” from the very start. This is a Spanish expression meaning something like: work as if SELLBYTEL was your company. This made me not only develop important values such as commitment and responsibility. It also helped me look beyond my job, be proactive and seek improvement constantly. I think this attitude was the key to my professional progress. 

What in your view is special about SELLBYTEL as an employer?

To me, SELLBYTEL is all about its people and the pleasant work environment. Being able to count on your manager’s constant support and having a great team is just priceless!

Last but not least, how do you like to spend your free time? 

I love sports. I have played tennis since I was a child. I am also very much into beach volleyball, kitesurfing, snowboarding and wakeboarding. Most importantly, though, I enjoy spending time with my family. I have a three-year-old son, who already stands on a skateboard and I will surely put something with wheels under my one-year-old baby’s feet, as soon as my wife agrees! (laughs)
