„Seize every opportunity you get"
Meet our Webhelp colleague Stuart Walker who is based in the United Kingdom. Stuart joined Webhelp in 2011 as an Advisor for a leading media and telecommunications conglomerate. His role involved handling customer retention calls and shortly after, he moved into various operational roles like Team Leader & Operations manager. In 2014 he got the opportunity to take a three-month attachment in India to support the set-up of a Digital Centre of Excellence in Gurgaon. He enjoyed his stay there and ended up staying for four years. Find out more about Stuart’s career in our latest success story.
Stuart, could you tell us more about your time in India?
Sure! my time in India was the highlight of my career. With the support of my colleagues in the UK, such as Anton Manley, I was able to grow and develop as an Operational Leader. I had the opportunity to experience a different culture while also focusing on creating a WoW place to work for our people. During my time there, I was exposed to our client’s activities and always had a passion of talking about our capabilities to fulfill and deliver our commitments.
When I first moved to India to set up an operation team of 25 specialists, I wanted to create an environment that our people will enjoy and also look forward to coming to work every day. Over my four years in India, we grew to over 200 specialists and it was very important to me to never lose the focus on engagement.
I always listened, applied what people suggested and even sat next to someone new every day to understand their role. I was never afraid to engage with people. I always held meetings and understood when someone wasn't feeling good. I am proud to say that of all the 220 people that were part of Webhelp India I knew every name and something about everyone.
And after that you moved back to the UK, then took over your current position. How did you find out about this opportunity?
I applied for the current role through a recruiting post that I found on WISE. I was just browsing our intranet one day when I came across the Global Careers Page, and saw an opportunity for a Global Account Manager. I contacted the hiring team to find out more information about the role, sent my CV and luckily, I was selected.
So what’s your current role all about?
My current role at Webhelp is Global Account Manager within the Global Sales and Solutions team. I am the focal point of contact between our client, an International office supply retailing company and Webhelp. I also support in bringing consistency across various countries. My job does involve a lot of travelling but most of the time I work from our office in Falkirk. I feel it is important to have a strong relationship with your client, so I also work from our client’s headquarters in Manchester and the rest of the time I am out and about visiting our various operational sites.
That’s an interesting career journey, what do you enjoy the most about Webhelp as an employer?
I love the focus on People that Webhelp has, we are not just a typical BPO conveyer belt. We truly develop and help our people to grow. It doesn't matter if you have the educational qualifications behind you: as long as you have the experience and the dedication, then the sky is the limit!
Which advice would you give to other colleagues who are looking to grow their career at Webhelp?
I think the best advice that I have ever received through my career was "You can do anything with a positive attitude better than you can do it with a negative one", and I will pass it to you, my colleagues. Also, I encourage everyone to not just look at the opportunities in your region, but also look at the ones in our whole Webhelp Group. Make sure to check out our WISE Careers page!
And finally, how do you like to spend your free time?
I am a massive football fan and a season ticket holder for Kilmarnock football club. I also enjoy watching movies and reading novels, Michael Connelly being my favorite author. Currently I find myself listening to Bollywood and Punjabi songs when driving to and from work. (smiles)
